Abstract

The promise of 3D printing is that shape complexity is free, meaning that 3D printing an ornate or intricate object will not require more time or cost than a simple cube of the same mass. With 3D printing, highly complex objects are possible, but there are two issues that make living up to this promise of “shape complexity freedom” a challenge: designers must have the imagination and skill to make complex designs a reality, and the software being used must have the capabilities to make those designs possible. Most likely, artists and engineers will bravely step forward to meet the demand of dreaming up new complex designs; therefore, the biggest issue is the software having the right features to meet the designer’s needs.
