Since the invention of the World Wide Web in 1990, web sites have been hosted on servers, or web servers to be more specific. A web site is hosted on either an on-premises server or a server hosted by a service provider. So it seems that cloud computing was here since day one of the Internet, and it’s not entirely a new concept. It’s the same idea of hosting a web site on a service provider’s server, but it was developed and enhanced to expand from just a web site to virtual machines, virtual networks, databases, and so on. So, if you want to compare traditional hosting methods to today’s cloud computing, think of them as similar to Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS).
