## Abstract

This chapter looks at the topic of standard probability distributions such as the normal distribution, exponential distribution, binomial distribution and Poisson distribution. There are several ways of describing a probability distribution, which include giving its probability density function (or probability mass function for discrete distributions), its cumulative distribution function or its inverse cumulative distribution function. These functions are useful in the same way as a set of statistical tables, as they allow you to calculate probabilities and quantiles for a given distribution.
