In the preceding chapter, I analyzed the views of Castoriadis, a political scientist and psychoanalyst, on the imaginary institution of human societies. Where he emphasized creativity, indeed the utter newness and otherness in the institution of what he calls the social-historical, I proposed to link this creativity to the developing object and symbol capacity of children. In study 12 I continue the inquiry of the nature of society by turning to another academic discipline—literary and cultural criticism.
