Abstract

In health, the islet cells of the endocrine pancreas continuously monitor the blood levels of all metabolic substrates and respond immediately to any glucose disturbance by secreting an appropriate amount of insulin into the bloodstream. Glucose—insulin interaction is a classic example of control exerted by an effective feedback control loop, which is shown as a hydraulic analogue in Fig. 9.1.
