The onset of illness results in changes in the normal state and/or function in the patient. In order to describe, analyze, and control such alterations, we need a formalism whereby we represent states of health, transitions between states, and abnormal processes and functions and the way they interact. From the onset, it is important to distinguish this general medical knowledge from data and knowledge structures representing a particular patient.
