Magnetism of Transition Metal Clusters: Overview and Perspectives

  • G. M. Pastor

Abstract

Recent theoretical work on itinerant magnetism and electron correlations in small clusters is reviewed. First, self-consistent tight-binding results of free and embedded clusters are discussed. The environment dependence of the magnetic behavior resulting from surface and interface proximity-effects, bond-length relaxations and changes in structure is analyzed concisely within this framework. A rigorous study of electron correlations, magnetism and cluster structure within the topological Hubbard model is then surveyed. Current perspectives are discussed giving emphasis to finite temperature phenomena.
