A Method for Intrinsic Temperature Regulation of Miniature Stirling Coolers

Abstract

A method for intrinsic temperature regulation of miniature Stirling coolers has been developed and patented at AEG Aktiengesellschaft. This method allows unregulated coolers of any standard type to be easily upgraded to quasi-regulated coolers without affecting the mechanical, electrical and thermal cooler/system interface. Physically, the method works via controlled affecting of the internal thermo- and fluiddynamic process mechanisms by appropriate additives to the working gas.

Cooling performance and input power data are presented and compared to electronically regulated coolers. For these Demand Refrigeration (DR) Coolers regulation is provided by means of a hybridized electronic circuit, integrated in the compressor housing. This type of integrated electronics is available for Rotary as well as Linear Coolers and is capable of realizing a high temperature stability mandatory for 2. Generation IR detectors. The paper is completed with Linear Cooler life test results.
