Abstract

Our preoccupation with the topic of the development of the self was occasioned by an empirical study by two of the authors carried out at the Max Planck Institute (Döbert & Nunner-Winlder, 1975). We were interested in types of potential for conflict and apathy in the developing individual which might demonstrate that the acquisition of functionally necessary motivations and legitimations in contemporary society is subject to limitations. Such potentials cannot be explained with trivial psychological assumptions but rather have their origin in the realm of socialization.
