Factors Influencing Day to Day Variability of Human Ventilatory Sensitivity to Carbon Dioxide
It is well accepted that the ventilatory response to inhaled carbon dioxide displays large inter- and intra-subject variability. However, the published literature contains very little quantitative information to support this belief, and certainly nothing that addresses the issue specifically. In his 1967 paper, Read5 examined the reproducibility of his rebreathing technique and obtained a coefficient of variation of about 16% (range 7%-20%). More recently, Berkenbosch and coworkers1 compared the rebreathing and steady-state methods for measuring CO2 sensitivity, and in doing so, made repeated rebreathing measurements during a single day. The coefficient of variation was about 15% (range 2%-34%). These, and other studies, indicate that for the rebreathing technique, the within day coefficient of variation is about 16%.
