A Mathematical Model of the Ventilatory Response to a Period of Sustained Isocapnic Hypoxia in Humans
The human ventilatory response to a period of isocapnic hypoxia is biphasic, with a fast initial increase in ventilation after the step into hypoxia, followed by a slower decline towards its initial value. At the end of the hypoxic period there is another rapid change in ventilation but the decrease is not as great as the initial increase. We have developed a mathematical model to describe the response to hypoxia, taking into account the rapid changes in ventilation at the steps of Po2, the gradual decline, and the asymmetry between the on and the off responses.
