Summary of Results
Our objective in this study has been to follow the entire population of the 1958 Philadelphia birth cohort as it moved from the legal status of juvenile to that of adult. We have been able to observe the transition from the acts that comprised the delinquency career to those that comprised the adult criminal careers through the age of 26. The principal focus of this investigation has centered on the issue of the continuity versus discontinuity between the delinquent career and the adult criminal career. Our investigation revealed that continuity was by far the most likely transition. Cohort members were most likely to continue as adults as they had behaved as juveniles. Because we found that delinquents showed the greatest likelihood of committing adult crime, we subsequently tried to uncover what it is about juvenile delinquency that might make delinquents more likely to continue their illegal conduct as adults and why other delinquents desisted from such conduct.
