Evaluation After Acute Myocardial Infarction

A 57-year-old local business executive had been in excellent health his entire life until the day of admission. On that day, he had worked his usual day at the office, and exercised for 90 minutes at his local health club as he had done three times weekly for the previous five years. Later that evening, he and his wife dined out, and both retired for the night at their usual time. At 3:00 am, he awoke with an uncomfortable heavy burning feeling in his chest. He was unable to sleep, and thinking he had a severe case of indigestion, took several doses of antacids throughout the rest of the night with no significant relief. Unable to sleep, he eventually showered, dressed and left for work at 7:00 am. Later that morning, he spoke with his wife by telephone and told her never to make reservations at the same restaurant again, and explained his miserable night in detail. His wife, a secretary at a physician’s office, became quite concerned about his symptoms and demanded that he see his physician immediately.
