The Importance of Hippocampal Gamma Oscillation for Place Cells
The firing of rat hippocampal place cells advances to earlier phases of the theta cycle as the rat moves through a place field. It has also been observed that when a rat repeatedly traverses a track, the place field shifts slowly in a direction opposite to the direction of movement. We have constructed a physiologically realistic network model of the CA3 region, based on nested theta and gamma oscillations. This model accounts for the phase precession and place-field shift. From this work, a set of further predictions follows which are testable if both theta and gamma oscillations are measured in conjunction with place cell activity.
