Abstract

Rodentia is an extremely successful order of small, furry, gnawing animals found worldwide. Some are entirely herbivorous, others mostly insectivorous. All are characterized by high fertility and reproductive capacity. There are some endearing wild rodents, including squirrels, chipmunks, woodchucks, gophers, beavers, muskrats, and guinea pigs, and some not so well liked, such as rats, mice, and porcupines. Rats and mice cause billions of dollars worth of food and property damage and may carry various diseases such as plague and typhus. Because of their small size and high fertility rate, rats, hamsters, and guinea pigs are bred to achieve various special strains for biological research.
