Measurement by Decoherence in the Quantum Zeno Experiment

Abstract

The measurements in the experimental test of quantum Zeno effect, reported by Itano et al. [Phys. Rev. A 41, 2295 (1990)], are analyzed using the environment-induced decoherence theory. The spontaneous emission lifetime of the relevant level emerges as the ‘decoherence time’ which sets a fundamental limit on the realizability of the condition of continuous measurements.
