Adiabatic Generation of Stable Field-Supported Rydberg Wavepackets

Abstract

We have shown1 that the spectrum of the Hamiltonian for the Hydrogen atom in a circularly polarized field can be locally harmonic. Therefore the simplest eigenfunction has Gaussian-like shape and the probability density associated with it represents a nonspreading wave packet moving around a circular orbit. The lifetime of this state is infinite within the harmonic approximation and further numerical experiments2 have confirmed it to be extremely long. Because of the beautiful connection with Trojan asteroids we have called those states Trojan wavepackets1,2.
