Abstract

Quantum statistical effects in bosonic systems create many interesting physical phenomena, such as lasing, superconductivity, and Bose-Einstein condensation [1]. Recently, the progress in laser cooling and trapping of atoms has intensified research aimed at observing similar effects in cold atoms. For a massive bosonic field, condensation effects become important when the thermal de Broglie wavelength exceeds the interparticle spacing. This condition is easily satisifed for semiconductor excitons at cryogenic temperatures.
