Quantum Decoherence Measurements Through Two-Atom Correlations

Abstract

The experimental monitoring of the evolution of coherent superpositions of classically distinguishable states towards statistical mixtures, which is a cornerstone of quantum measurement theory, has not been realized yet, due to two main difficulties: the decoherence time is very short, and it is necessary to imagine an experiment which would display interference effects between the macroscopically distinct states. In this work, we present several experimentally feasible schemes for preparing and detecting coherent superpositions of classically distinct states of the electromagnetic field in one or more cavities.
