Population Transfer Via the Continuum: Effects of Continuum Structure
We have shownl that a structureless continuum can be used as an intermediary for a significant transfer of population from one bound state to another in a stimulated Raman transition. In this scheme and in related experiments2, one uses two laser pulses that overlap in time and are arranged in the counterintuitive order. Nakajima et al3 have pointed out two problems with this scheme involving the continuum. (a) Continuum structure reduces the probability of transfer to the desired state. (b) When two laser beams with different carrier frequencies are used to drive transitions from either bound state to the continuum, the effect of undesired transitions caused by laser 1 (2) driving transition from state 2 (1) to distant parts of the continuum could be very detrimental. We discuss these problems in this paper.
