Generation of Squeezed States Via Non-Degenerate Four Wave Mixing in an Ideal Λ System

Abstract

Squeezing generated via wave-mixing can be useful for many optical signal processing applications, such as low-noise amplification of a week image. Since most images of interest are broad-band in spatial frequencies, it is important to use a process that possesses a χ 3 type phase-matching, such as degenerate four-wave mixing1. However, the strongest amount of squeezing is generated using three-wave-mixing. On the other hand, four-wave-mixing in systems such as a two level atom does not produce significant squeezing, due to excess noise associated with resonance fluorescence2. What is needed is a process that produces strong squeezing, and is spatially broad-band.
