The Reactions of Hydra Attenuata Pall. to Various Photic Stimuli

Abstract

According to various investigations and occasional observations (Trembley, 1744; Wilson, 1891; Haase-Eichler, 1931; Haug, 1933; Singer et al., 1963; Passano and McCullough, 1965; Tardent and Frei, 1969) the freshwater Hydra perceives photic stimuli and reacts to them. The reaction-patterns to sudden light-intensity changes consist of extensions and/or contractions of the body and the tentacles or of phototactically motivated locomotory activities oriented to or from a permanent light source.
