Abstract

Nematocysts have classically been considered to be independent effectors, that is, the nematocyst, nematocyte, and the associated sensory receptor(s) operate without the control or intervention of the nervous system (e. g., Parker, 1916, 1919; Parker and Van Alstyne, 1932; Pantin, 1942a, b; Pantin and Pantin, 1943; Ewer, 1947; Jones, 1947; Burnett et. al., 1960; Lentz, 1966; Picken and Skaer, 1966).
