Some Microenvironmental Influences on Attachment Behavior of The Planula of Cyanea Capillata (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa)
The selective value of prudent settlement by larval stages is important for the persistence of sedentary species. The factors influencing larval behavior of marine invertebrates are reviewed by Crisp (1974). In many species reversal of taxes occurs prior to attachment on a suitable substrate; thus, the larva may be initially geonegative and/or photopositive, but as development proceeds changes occur in its response to the environmental factors so that the larva attaches upside-down in a shaded location (Crisp, 1974).
