Abstract
Chapters 3 and 4 dealt with characteristics and reaction rates of small quantities of coal particles under very carefully controlled laboratory conditions. This chapter and Chapter 6 consider the nature and characteristics of practical, coal-containing flames. This chapter treats direct combustion flames, while the next chapter emphasizes practical flames in coal gasification. In principle there is little difference in these two flame types. Direct combustion flames are those where the reactions of coal take place to near completion with CO2 and H2O being among the major product species and where a high-temperature gas is the principal purpose.
As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, ..
