In the previous chapter we formulated the basic equations for describing the conservation of mass, momentum, and energy in environments typical of coal combustors and gasifiers. In this chapter we will find that due to some very practical considerations, these equations must be modified for application to turbulent combustion. We will then identify different turbulence models and briefly discuss their range of applicability. We will introduce the effects of the turbulent carrier gas on the particles or droplets and finally present a recommended approach for describing turbulence in coal combustion and gasification.
