Repellent Effect of Trimethyl Thiazoline in the Wild Rat Rattus Norvegicus Berkenhout

Abstract

In 1968, Vernet-Maury et al. established that predator odor induced avoidance behavior in rats. Ethological analysis (Vernet-Maury et al., 1968), biochemical bioassays (Vernet-Maury, 1970) and bioelectrical recordings (Vernet-Maury and Chanel, 1967) led to the same conclusion: the predator odor increased emotional reactivity and induced freezing behavior in the albino rat. Recordings of olfactory bulb mitral cell electrical activity evidenced an inhibitory phenomenon, this inhibition being centrally controlled (Cattarelli et al., 1974). A pertinent index was recently added: under predator odor, ultrasonic vocalizations decreased (Vernet-Maury et al., 1992). Moreover, ontogenic analysis of this particular odor led to the conclusion that its frightening power is innate: pups, that regularly responded to this odor from birth to adulthood, did not habituate and showed freezing behavior in the open field test undertaken 3 months later (Duveau et al., 1981).
