New trends in alkali metals electrochemical intercalation into graphite and G.i.C’s in solid state cells

Abstract

Electrochemistry is one of the most important fields in which graphite intercalation compounds (GIC’s) have reached an industrial scale of applications. In the year 1985, more than 50 million primary lithium batteries using poly-(graphite fluoride) (CF)n as cathode active material were manufactured in Japan by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. and commercialized around the world1. The market is constantly increasing and must respond to an higher demand, particularly for small consumer items (LCD calculators, quartz watches, cameras,...)
