The Fourth Sardinian International Meeting on Models and Mechanisms in Chemical Carcinogenesis was a great challenge for all participants. In rather a tight and exhausting schedule, recent advances in carcinogenesis research were presented in numerous reviews, short oral presentations and posters. Both the oral presentations and the posters stimulated a lively and fruitful discussion. It is virtually impossible to summarize the plethora of information given during the five days of the meeting within a few minutes. I will, therefore, pick out some aspects which I felt to be of particular interest. This selection will certainly be biased by my specific interests in some research areas and my ignorance in others.
