Cancer and Quality of Life

Social and Community Stakes
  • Patrice Pinell

Abstract

This paper intends to broach the question of the social and community stakes involved in quality of life in the field of cancer from the viewpoint of an historian who has studied changes in the ways this disease is dealt with. I will make no attempt to define what might or could be the “true” stakes involved in quality of life. Rather, my aim is much less ambitious, namely, to present certain contributions to the debate. These contributions, the result of looking at the past in a way that is more detached than engaged (to borrow from the concepts forged by Norbert Elias(l), aspire to bring about a better understanding of how and why quality of life can today be considered a stake for society.
