Measurement of Campylobacteraceae Isoprenoid Quinones by Fast Atom Bombardment Mass Spectrometry
Isoprenoid quinones are useful in prokaryote chemosystematics, because their structure and distribution varies between genera.3 Taxonomically valuable structural features include the nature of the quinone nucleus, the number of isoprene units, and the degree of side chain unsaturation (Fig. 1). Campylobacters have menaquinone-6 (MK-6) as the predominant quinone, and also contain significant levels of a methylated menaquinone-6 (MMK-6).1,5 Helicobacters by contrast contain MK-6, but MMK-6 is absent or only present at low level.4,6
