Comparison of Staining Techniques for Detecting Gastric Helicobacters in Tissue Sections
Helicobacter pylori is histologically associated with both acute and chronic gastritis, and can be identified by its characteristic appearance with suitable stains in sections of gastric biopsies. The organism is difficult to see on routine haematoxylin and eosin sections. Silver-based stains have been reported to demonstrate bacteria efficiently and are used commonly in histopathology laboratories1,2. Some workers, however, have claimed that silver impregnation techniques are cumbersome and time consuming and proposed other stains3,6,7,9. “H. heilmannii” (“Gastrospirillum hominis”) are commonly found in the stomach of dogs and cats, and can infect humans5. Since this organism could not be cultured in vitro, it can only be diagnosed by staining smears or sections of gastric specimens. The aim of this study was to compare six histological stains which most readily demonstrate helicobacters on sections which were examined by a pathologist not very familiar with helicobacters.
