Detection of a Cytolethal Distending Toxin in Campylobacters of Human and Animal Origin
Although campylobacters are now recognized as important enteric pathogens in human diarrhoeal disease, specific virulence mechanisms in campylobacteriosis have not yet been clearly defined. Numerous attempts were made to elucidate the mechanism by which these pathogens express virulence. It has been shown that potential virulence factors include adhesion to the intestinal mucosa, invasion of intestinal epithelial cells, translocation across the intestinal epithelium, capability of colonization mediated by flagella and the formation of toxins5.
