The workshop on pathogenic mechanisms of Helicobacters encompassed a full programme that included papers on: the isolation and characterization of genes associated with virulence, the regulation of gene expression, antigenic structure, physiologic response to infection, and histopathological response to infection. Short presentations highlighted the salient points of thirteen studies and stimulated, in most cases, lively discussion. At the close of the workshop, the presentations were summarised in terms of the principles of bacterial pathogenesis.
