Abstract
ABO, the major red cell alloantigen system, was discovered by Landsteiner (1901) testing the agglutination of normal erythrocytes by serum from different individuals. His tests showed that individuals with A antigen on erythrocytes have anti-B antibodies in serum. People with B antigen on red cells have anti-A in serum. Persons devoid of A and B antigens on red cells (blood group zero or O) have both anti-A and anti-B, and AB individuals with both antigens on red cells have no natural anti-A or anti-B.
