Abstract
Everyone knows what an antibiotic is. However, the definition of an antibiotic has for several years been the subject of hot disputes among the experts in the field. The definition that we prefer, and that is accepted with minor variations by several authors, is that antibiotics are lowmolecular-weight microbial metabolites that at low concentrations inhibit the growth of other microorganisms. The reason for this preference is that this class of natural products is clearly identified by its origin and by its biological activity. Nevertheless, some of the expressions used in the definition need further clarification.
