Structure and Function of the Photosynthetic Apparatus
In photosynthesis, the process of conversion of light energy into chemical energy occurs in specialized membrane apparatus: external membranes of photosynthetic bacteria or intrachloroplastic membranes in the case of the oxygenic photosynthesis in green algae and higher plants. Most of the pigments which collect light energy of electron carriers are associated with protein complexes including several polypeptides non-covalentely bounded. Due to purification of these protein complexes are now possible, without a loss of their functional activity. On the other hand, two types of bacterial photocenters have been recently crystallized and their structure is now known with a resolution of a few angstroms.
