Microphase Separation in Bilayer Membranes

Abstract

A biological membrane is a complicated multicomponent, two-dimensional alloy of amphipathic molecules. The varied purposes that natural membranes serve require a high degree of order at the molecular level simultaneously with high flexibility and molecular mobility. Nature achieves these goals by using combinations of suitable lipid components and proteins.
