Abstract

There are two major soilborne diseases that are of economic concern to the growers in the Okanagan, Similkameen and Kootenay Valleys of British Columbia (Slykhuis and Li, 1985; Utkhede, 1987). Crown rot, caused by Phytophthora cactorum, has been an acute problem for apple orchardists in British Columbia since 1942 (Welsh, 1942). This disease is also of economic importance to apple growers around the world (McIntosh, 1975). Biological control of apple crown rot has been obtained by applying a siderophorepruducing Pseudomonas sp. directly on the lesion caused by P. cactorum (Janisiewicz and Covey, 1983). Significant reductions in root damage and increase in plant weight of apple seedlings infected with Phytophthora spp. were observed with isolates of Trichoderma and Gliocladium spp. in greenhouse tests (Smith et al., 1991). In addition, a strain (B8) of Enterobacter aerogenes has shown potential for biological control of crown rot of apple trees (Utkhede, 1987).
