Biological Control of SclerotiumRolfsii Root Rot of Sugarbeet with Trichoderma Harzianum
Sugarbeet root rot caused by Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc. is an important limiting factor in the production of sugarbeet. The use of antagonistic microorganisms is a potential nonchemical means for the control of this disease. Several species of Trichoderma proved to exert antagonistic activity against S. rolfsii (D’Ambra and Ferrata, 1984; Elad et al., 1980; Upadhyay and Mukhopadhyay, 1986; Wells et al., 1972). The present study was undertaken in southern Italy to assess the efficiency of T. harzianum in the control of S. rolfsii root rot in concrete tanks, and on a large scale in two successive sugarbeet crops (years) under field conditions.
