Biocontrol of Sugarbeet Damping-off with ChaetomiumGlobosum: Promises and Questions
The use of biological seed treatments to control seedling fungal pathogens has recently undergone small-scale commercial development (Campbell, 1989), but irregular performance and competition with chemical seed dressings is delaying commercial use. However, because chemical control of seedling diseases caused by several pathogens is often difficult. A biological seed dressing efficacious against several pathogens should have a chance. In Central Europe, damping-off of sugarbeet is caused by Pythium spp., Aphanomyces cochlioides, Phoma betae and Rhizoctonia solani. In the late 70’s, only thiram was used as a dressing for sugarbeet seed imported into Switzerland. Thiram was active against soilborne Pythium spp. and seedborne Phoma betae but control of damping-off was not satisfactory. For this reason our study was carried out. It should be noted that the role of A. cochlioides in the etiology of sugarbeet damping off in Switzerland was not established at that time.
