Control of Breathing and Its Disorders
The groups of nerve cells responsible for breathing are located in the brain stem (see Chapter 1). Their complex interconnections and the neural inputs they receive are the basis for rhythmic breathing and for selection of an ideal ratio of tidal volume to frequency, as well as regulation of the ventilation to meet continuously changing needs.
