Abstract
The removal of two electrons by absorption of a single photon is made possible only by interelectronic interaction. This process is closely related to one-electron ionization accompanied by excitation. In the first experiments [192] on double-electron ionization, one electron was removed from an inner shell, while the other was removed from an outer shell. The results were explained by the “shake-off” model, according to which the change in the atomic self-consistent field caused by removal of one of the inner electrons leads, in turn, to the removal of an outer electron. The situation became markedly more complex when data were obtained for removal of two electrons from the same shell, and especially on removal from an outer one [26].
