Abstract

The total number of species included in the orders under discussion is about 7200, distributed through 1818 genera. Some of the problems we have to confront can be exemplified by a particular example. In 1957 Holm defended a thesis in which he divided Leptosphaeria into segregate genera; that represented a revolution in the classification of this group of fungi. That genus is characterized by perithecioid ascomata, with a comparatively thick wall of scleroplectenchymatous cells, bitunicate asci, and brownish several-septate ascospores.
