Abstract

Two types of leadership affect school districts, schools, and the classroom: formal and informal. Formal leaders are sanctioned through election or appointment. Informal leaders develop power through their ability to give recognition, withhold rewards, or carry out sanctions. The sociograms of school social structures in Dry den, Elkin, and Skyland provide excellent examples of informal leadership.
