Development of a Miniaturized Digital High Angular Resolution Laser Irradiation Detector (Harlid) And Its Integration in a Laser Warning Receiver
For many years Defence Research Establishment Valcartier (DREV) has been involved in the conception and the development of Laser Irradiation Detector (LID) systems for the protection of land and airborne platforms against laser-aided weapons. The efforts of the last ten years of our research program led to the development of several concepts of detectors capable of providing the angular location of a laser source. In this paper, we present the design and performance characteristics of a miniaturized digital High Angular Resolution Laser Irradiation Detector (HARLID) module capable to identify the angle of arrival (AOA) of an incoming laser beam to an accuracy of about ± 1° within a field of view greater than 90°. Two of these patented Si HARLID (1-band) modules have been recently integrated in a demo Laser Warning Receiver (LWR) system. Results of laboratory and field evaluations of this LWR will be discussed. Details of development of a digital 2-band HARLID capable to cover a wider spectral band will be also given.
