Antiviral Drug Resistance in Herpes Simplex Virus
Studies of drug resistance in herpesviruses have provided insights into the mechanisms of action of antiviral drugs, into the potential for drug resistance in the clinic and possible solutions, into virus enzyme structure-function relationships, and into mechanisms of basic viral processes ranging from gene expression to pathogenesis. Herpesvirus drug resistance has been reviewed extensively. 1–7 Therefore, rather than simply adding yet another factual review to this literature, I will instead mainly offer opinions on examples of each of the above kinds of insights and their potential clinical relevance. I will cite very few original papers, the reader can find ample citations to the original literature in the reviews listed above.
