Abstract

The atmospheric phenomena of photochemical oxidants, acidifying compounds, and their precursors are complex and coupled. Analyzing the causes and effects of changes in their cycles is critical since the chemical composition of the troposphere and the presence of certain trace species can greatly influence health, weather, climate, and agriculture. To better understand the troposphere it is necessary to know: (1) which species are present and at what concentrations and distribution (spatial, temporal, geographic) these are present; (2) which processes control the species cycles; (3) how these species interact with climatic factors; and (4) how anthropogenic factors (present and projected) impact the cycles.
