AIDS Prevention in Paraguay
The dispersion of the HIV virus at a world level increases constantly. Almost twenty million HIV-infected people have been registered by the World Health Organization (WHO); of different ages, languages, and social levels, with different sexual habits, men and women, as well as children born to infected mothers. The virus does not discriminate. The Republic of Paraguay is not free of this scourge. In this matter, it is sufficient to mention the experience of neighboring countries such as Brazil and Argentina: the former with the highest incidence in Latin America and the third or fourth place in the world, and the 100,000 people infected in Argentina (as estimated by the National Program Director, June 1993), with an official number of 5,000 persons having fully developed AIDS.
