Kinematic Dysfunction of the Distal Radioulnar Joint after Distal Radial Fractures
The distal radioulnar joint is part of an extended joint system from the elbow to the wrist. The axial motion that this joint system produces is responsible for the torque that may be generated for manipulation of materials. Proximally, the radius spins in an elongated conical fashion about the capitellum, and distally, it describes a cam-like motion around the ulnar head. This provides an arc of approximately 160° of pronosupination. The axis of rotation describes an irregular course that passes near the center of the roughly circular radial head to an area around the foveal attachment of the triangular fibrocartilage to the ulnar head.8 Duchenne5 pointed out that the distal radius and ulna described arcs about each other during pronosupination, with the former being larger than the latter.
